While nuclei form the core of matter, a description of them in terms of their fundamental constituents, quarks and gluons, has eluded us. Therefore, several "effective" models of nuclei have been created for use in different applications, from the nucleus as a collection of free quarks used in high energy physics to the complex many-body and shell-model pictures used in low energy studies of nuclear structure. I will discuss the connection between these different pictures, highlighting cases where higher-energy measurements can be used to study details of nuclear structure, or where low-energy nuclear structure has an impact on the quark description of the nucleus.
