As recently emphasized, the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade is the central priority of Argonne National Laboratory. The Upgrade passed its first milestone with the confirmation of mission need by the signing of CD0 by Bill Brinkman on April 22, 2010. For the first time since its dedication in 1996, the brightest x-ray synchrotron in the western hemisphere will be comprehensively upgraded -- to provide the brightest source of x-rays above 25 keV, 100-fold shorter pulse duration to ~1-ps and enhanced spatial resolution down to a few nanometers. The enhanced capabilities will enable exploration of phenomena in real materials, under real conditions in real time. In this talk, I will discuss some recent science highlights and drivers for the APS Upgrade.
