Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) is one of the largest interdisciplinary research centers in Europe and pursues cutting-edge research addressing today's pressing issues. With its special expertise in nuclear physics, materials science, nanotechnology, and information technology, as well as biosciences and brain research, FZJ tackles challenges in the areas of basic science, energy, environment, and health. Activities are concerned with both long-term, fundamental and cross disciplinary contributions to science and technology as well as specific technological applications. FZJ is a member of the Helmholtz Association and has a staff of more than 4,700 from 45 different countries. In this colloquium I will highlight ongoing research in Jülich and describe how FZJ's scientists, together with partners from universities, the basic science community, and industry are working for new insights into the structure of matter, fast and energy-efficient information technologies, a sustainable energy supply, protection of the climate and the environment, and an ageing society.
