Ultracold atomic gases have enjoyed tremendous success as model quantum systems in which one can precisely control the particles' internal degrees of freedom and external motional states. Ultracold molecular gases would open up new possibilities such as electric dipole-dipole interactions, electric-field control of interactions, and ultracold chemistry. Proposed uses for ultracold molecular gases include precision metrology, quantum information, realizing condensed matter models, and exploring ultracold chemistry. I will present our recent work creating a near quantum degenerate gas of ultracold polar molecules.
