Shell-model configuration mixing provides wave functions and observables for nuclei that are required for nuclear astrophysics, for the extraction of electroweak interaction and particle properties from nuclei, and for the understanding of many-body symmetries in nuclei from those near stability to those near the the proton and neutron drip lines. I will use results for the nickel isotopes to illustrate some advances in computational methods. I will discuss the theoretical problems involved in the confrontation and convergence of ab-initio, configuration mixing and energy-density-functional methods for nuclear structure.
