An in-flight radioactive beam separator, named AIRIS, is being developed to enhance the radioactive beam capabilities of the ATLAS facility at Argonne. The new separator will produce a wider variety of radioactive beams with higher intensities than the existing facility can deliver. AIRIS will be located just downstream of the ATLAS accelerator in order to provide radioactive beams to most experimental areas while maintaining stable beam operations. The separation is performed in two steps: the first is magnetic for momentum selection and the second uses an rf sweeper to take advantage of the time separation between the beam of interest and potential contaminants, including the primary beam tail. In this talk, the AIRIS design will be presented along with its expected performance for a selected set of radioactive beams. Possible future upgrades to further enhance the radioactive beam capabilities at ATLAS will be discussed.
