The region around the neutron-rich N = 28 isotones 46Ar, 44S and 42Si has provided much insight into the changes to nuclear structure that occur in neutron-rich nuclei. First evidence for a breakdown of the N = 28 magic number in 44S, from an emergence of collectivity, was hinted at by beta-decay work and was ultimately quantified with intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation. More recently, shape and configuration coexistence was established in 44S, adding to the rich structure observed at neutron number N = 28 in the sulfur isotopes. Pushing beyond N=28, a new study of 47Ar using two complementary intermediate-energy direct nuclear reactions and the first spectroscopy of 45S will be presented.
