The Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research (FAIR) is currently under construction at Darmstadt, Germany. In its final stage it will comprise two linear accelerators, three synchrotrons, a high resolution fragment separator, a p-bar target, and five storage rings. The physics program covers CPT verification with anti-protonic atoms, probing the critical endpoint in the phase diagram, complete kinematic measurements of reactions with RIBs, and the origin of the proton mass, for instance. Primary ion beams are to be delivered by the UNILAC, which will be upgraded in order to meet the beam requirements imposed by FAIR. This upgrade includes several innovative techniques and applications. They comprise a new gaseous stripper with enhanced efficiency, full 4D transverse emittance measurements, a round-to-flat beam adaptor, asymmetric transverse beam focusing along the new Alvarez-type DTL, optimized shape of the drift tube surface w.r.t. shunt impedance per surface field, and a field stabilization and tuning scheme without post-couplers.
