Research Interests
My interest lies in the study of reaction mechanisms, i.e. trying to understand how nuclei interact with each other via elastic and inelastic scattering, through few-particle transfers up to complex multi-particle transfer reactions and fusion, and the interplay among these various reaction modes. The study of these processes requires cutting-edge, high-resolution detector systems.
In the last 10 years I have worked on the development of unstable (radioactive) beams at the ATLAS accelerator, using either the In-Flight technique (for short-lived isotopes) or the two-accelerator method (for longer-lived isotopes). With these exotic beams many problems in nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics can be addressed for the first time. The detector systems developed for these studies can also be used for experiments in Accelerator Mass Spectrometry where isotopes at ultra-low concentrations (<10-16) have to be detected. This research area has close ties to other fields, such as geology, paleontology, oceanography, astrophysics and others.
